Mobilize for Disaster Relief

Cross-posted from M Squared T:

Brothers and sisters,
The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina is beyond our comprehension. Millions are without the basic necessities of life. Their world has changed, and it will not return to normal for most of them. Right now numerous organizations are taking donations of money and movable goods to begin to help cover the basic human needs of hundreds of thousands of people.

Yet beyond donations of money and goods, there are other significant needs. Countless thousands are homeless. Infrastructure is damaged and could endanger more people. An entire city is under water. There are great needs for labor to clean up the mess and to help build shelter for those displaced by the storm.

Many of those most affected by this tragedy were people who were too poor to get out of the way. They did not have the resources to move when asked to. Most of them, and many others who were evacuated, have seen their entire livelihoods destroyed by the storm.

In times of tragedy like this, the words of Scripture resound in my mind: “Remember the poor. Care for the widow and orphan. Provide for the needs of the dispossessed. Be the voice for the voiceless. Help those struggling for basic survival to merely live.”

For these reasons, I am organizing crews of people to go down to the affected areas and lend whatever help we are able to lend. I have been in contact with the Red Cross and a couple of other agencies and I am working with them to organize the best kind of help we can offer. Details of what this will look like are still developing. Most likely it will take the form of chartering busses with work crews to go down to the affected areas as soon as civilian workers are permitted into the hardest-hit areas. We will do the work of helping to rebuild the Gulf Coast in the name of Jesus Christ.

If you are interested in joining in a work crew, please contact me. Anyone who wants to help with the organization of the crews, even if they are unable to go down to the affected areas, please contact me. I may be reached through comments on M Squared T Dot Com (http://www.msquaredt.com/blog/2005/09/03/mobilize/), by e-mail at mmthomas at fbcwarren dot com, or through my office at 330.369.5432.

Together we can do the work of the ministry of the Body of Christ.

Peace in Christ:
